I'm not going to college and you can't make me!

So I'm back. Actually I've been home since Sunday, and I've just been lazy about posting. The week of babysitting went well- the children are very well disciplined and respectful. I caught a cold from one of the kids, as I always seem to do when I babysit. There were five kids under the age of eight, and they kept me busy, but all went well.

It snowed again last Saturday and the boys have been enjoying sledding and hot chocolate. I have been getting back into my routine and trying to get some work done before our home school co-op starts up again. On the topic of waiting at home- just the other day while I was at work one of our members came in to exercise. We chatted a bit; she asked me if I had found a job yet, then all of a sudden she said seriously,
"You know honey, you DO have to go to college."
(I do not like to be called "honey" by people who are not in my family.)
I laughed, somewhat incredulously, (What? Are you serious? Who are you to tell me what to do?) And said:
Why?
And she basically said:
"Well, you may have to support yourself if you husband is unable to, or if you need extra money someday, I mean, getting married and having kids is ok, but you should be able to get a good job."

Me:
I agree that I should have a way to support myself
(in case my husband dies, or if I never get married) but I don't think college is the best way to gain a secondary education.
She just repeated what she said before. I probably shocked her terribly; she is a public school teacher and she seems to be against home schooling. But the arrogance! Telling me that I have to go to college. College is not the only way to learn a trade, to assure a good job and earn a living; and as far as art goes, it is not the most efficient or the best quality way to learn. People don't think outside the box.
So frustrating!

:P That's almost funny.
I dread the day someone tells me such demands, whether I'm planning on going to college or not.

Then again, I've already had people pretty much tell me that by not returning to Tech School (long story) that I would throwing be the 'only jobs' down the drain.

I'm learning to thank God for the people who do support the decisions I've made...and let the rest roll.

I have no clue why I'm writing another book on your blog. This is strange; I never comment on a blog this much, and to think, I've done it twice this week now?!!

I know what you mean! I haven't actually had anyone tell me that I HAVE to go to college. But when I tell them that college isn't in my immediate plans, I always get that "oh, you're one of those" looks. I keep having to explain to them that I'm not anti-college, it's just not right for me at this point. Besides, if I don't go into debt at this young age, it's less likely that I'll have to get a "job" later in life.

The cool thing now is that I'll be able to tell them that I'm "going into business" myself.... without secondary education. And I'll be making good money too! I'll have to tell you all about it when we get together.

PS... Are you feeling better? Don't want you feeling like we have to get together if you're sick. ((Emily))<-- it's a hug if you were wondering

Hi Emily,
Interesting post. In today's society, most people assume that everyone who wants to do something useful must go to college. However, the fact that most people believe something does not make it true. After all, there was a time in history when most people believed that the earth was flat. Obviously, that did not make it true.
Another myth that you mentioned is the belief that choosing motherhood is a waste of a life. In my opinion, that is totally false. Our modern society has supposedly 'liberated' women. In reality, we have made some women slaves to their careers. In addition, children have paid a heavy price.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a different path than the world around us. In fact, obedience to Christ usually requires us think outside of the box (Romans 12:2). God Bless.

PS #2 I too detest being called "honey"... I dread those restaurants where the waitress just drips with faked interest and asks "whan can get you honey?" The great one though is our one customer wh calls me "honey chil'" That one is so funny I don't mind.

if not college, what have you decided to do?

I'm glad babysitting went well! However, I'm so sorry you caught another cold! Those are so awful. And, I know what you mean about the college thing...

If not college- volunteer work, ministry to my family, friends, and soldiers, a job, hobbies, political work, artwork, etc. There are so many possibilities, and I am continuing to research them.
