Sunday in Vyborg

Sunday morning we actually had to get up on time. Church started at 11am, and our guides picked us up at 10:15. The church here is, as I understand it, one of the larger Evangelical churches in this part of Russia. The church here is under attack here, even as it is in America. Back home we've had protesters outside our doors; here the Pastor told of difficulties in renting a meeting place under the corrupt and biased local government.

In the courtyard outside the apartment there's this coach for rentals and weddings and such. Just one of those random but interesting things in my path. Anyway, church was about two hours all told, mostly singing the first half and sermon the second half. Except for the language barrier it was very home-like. People were welcoming, but I didn't speak to many of them. I'm not sure if that was my fault or theirs.

The view out of the courtyard at the back of the apartment complex. Sunday was a bit sunny, which I gather is something of a rarity during this season.

Sunday evening the D parents gave their first presentation to the church here; they were gone for about four hours. I stayed at the apartment with the two youngest, and then the other six came home for dinner and chaos ensued. It's been a little while since I babysat this many kids! We couldn't even figure out the TV system, because of course it's all in Russian. That's definitely on the to-do list.

Mark your calendar for a dinner with the Goodwins some evening in December. We're dying to hear you talk about the evangelical church in Russia, perceptions of America from the outside looking in and what a trip like this has meant to your sense of our evolving cultural character. What an adventure!
(Lonnie Lynn says hey.)

I will absolutely take you up on the dinner invite, if you promise we won't have tacos or any derivative of tacos!
